Water treatment chemical certification

If you manufacture, sell or distribute water treatment chemicals in North America, your products are required to comply with NSF/ANSI Standard 60: Drinking Water Treatment Chemicals – Health Effects by most governmental agencies that regulate drinking water supplies.
Developed by a team of scientists, industry experts and key industry stakeholders, NSF/ANSI 60 sets health effects criteria for many water treatment chemicals, including:
- Corrosion and scale inhibitors
- Coagulants and flocculants
- Disinfection and oxidation chemicals
- pH adjustment, softening, precipitation and sequestering chemicals

- All other specialty chemicals used in drinking water treatment
Municipal water product certification
NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects Certification is required by most governmental agencies that regulate drinking water supplies in North America. NSF/ANSI 61 sets health effects criteria for many water system components including:
- Protective barrier materials (cements, paints, coatings)
- Joining and sealing materials (gaskets, adhesives, lubricants)
- Mechanical devices (water meters, valves, filters)
- Pipes and related products (pipe, hose, fittings)
- Plumbing devices (faucets, drinking fountains)
- Process media (filter media, ion exchange resins)
- Non-metallic potable water materials
Concrete site mix evaluation: drinking water contaminants can come from many sources, including the equipment used for water storage and transportation. Concrete used in large storage tanks, reservoirs and pipelines is usually a combination of cement, admixtures, curing compound, sand and gravel. It can also contain fly ash and other additives to strengthen the concrete and increase its durability. However, any of these additives can have contaminants that can cause compliance problems for the utility and present potential health risks to the consumer.
Low lead compliance: on January 4, 2014, the new US Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) requirements will go into effect requiring all pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings and fixtures used for potable water to meet new lead free requirements. The SDWA will require all drinking water products sold or installed for public water systems or plumbing in facilities to meet a weighted average lead content of no more than 0.25%. Solder and flux continue to be held to 0.20%. We offer two options to help ensure your products meet the requirements and also comply with the new accepted criteria for lead extraction: NSF/ANSI 61 Annex G and NSF/ANSI 372.
Public drinking water equipment performance: this NSF guideline establishes performance requirements in the treatment and production of drinking water, and includes requirements such as the US EPA’s Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR). Certification to the Drinking Water Equipment Performance Program demonstrates compliance with federal testing requirements but also adds a unique audit component to prove that products are manufactured using recommended methods and processes.
POU/POE testing and certification
NSF writes standards and provides testing and certification services for point-of-use (POU) and point-of-entry (POE) drinking water treatment systems and components. Testing can include material safety, structural integrity and contaminant reduction testing.
