Hyflux consortium wins $250m contract for water desalination project in Oman

Singaporean water treatment firm Hyflux, along with its consortium partner National Power and Water, has won a contract to build a $250m desalination project in Qurayyat, Oman.

The contract has been awarded to the consortium by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company SAOC (OPWP).

According to the contract, the consortium will design, build, own and operate the independent water project in Qurayyat (Qurayyat IWP), which is expected to have a daily capacity of 200,000m³.

The project is expected to start commercial operations by May 2017 according to a 20-year water purchase agreement with OPWP.

Hyflux will be responsible for turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the project, according to a $210m contract.

The firm will also look after the operations and maintenance of the plant, which will use reverse osmosis technology for the desalination of seawater.

The consortium still needs to finalise details for the Qurayyat IWP with OPWP.

The new project is unlikely to have significant material financial impact on the firm for the current financial year, Hyflux said.
