Dutch Water Authorities to support use of Nereda technology in wastewater plants abroad

Dutch Water Authorities has signed a partnership with engineering and project management consultancy company Royal HaskoningDHV to support the use of Nereda technology in wastewater treatment plants outside Netherlands.

According to the terms of the agreement, Dutch Water Authorities will work on new facilities using Nereda technology in countries including Brazil, Australia and South Africa.

Royal HaskoningDHV Water Technology Products and Innovation global director René Noppeney said: "Dutch Water Authorities brings unique experience in the field of operational management of Nereda plants.

"Together with our knowledge and experience of design, this creates a powerful combination. Consequently, we can provide an even better service to our Nereda clients and partners abroad."

Nereda is a sustainable wastewater treatment technology developed by Royal HaskoningDHV in co-ordination with Delft University of Technology, the Dutch Foundation for Applied Water Research (STOWA) and other water authorities in Netherlands.

The technology involves wastewater treatment with bacteria (aerobic granular biomass) which sinks quickly.

Wastewater treatment plants equipped with the technology have been found to cost less than conventional facilities and can up to four times smaller.

Nereda also enables the wastewater treatment plants to reduce their energy consumption by up to 50% and usually eliminates the use of chemicals.

Dutch Water Authorities board member Gerard Doornbos said: "Dutch Water Authorities shares global knowledge with countries where water management faces many challenges. We learn from this ourselves and, at the same time, support the export potential of the Dutch water sector.

"Moreover, our employees will gain ‘out of the box’ experience and learn from applying the technique in a different context. This, in turn, will help us with the water requirements in the Netherlands."
